Abstract: As the main .objective of this work concerned reading, a number of graded reading tests were given to a group of hearing impaired children and a control group of normal hearing peers in order to establish the reading level of the hearing impaired children. To make the results and their interpretation more clear, chapter l introduces the reader to the factors involved in the processes of reading in general. Chapter 2 deals with the effect of hearing impairment on language development and reading skills. References are made to results from foreign studies. Chapter 3 looks at the educational facilities available to the hearing impaired in Malta, whereas Chapter 4 includes a description of the tests, the children and the results of the investigation. Chapter 5 includes a few suggestions that could improve reading abilities in the hearing impaired and help them keep up with their hearing peers.
