Abstract: The experience of the individual in the architectural space is based on a number of relationships - both voluntary and involuntary - between the architectural elements within the space and the individual, and between the individual and the other users of the space. The following dissertation investigates the experience of individuals within an architectural space, in relation to the experiences of loneliness and solitude. Through theoretical research the psychological aspects of both experiences, the architecture of the urban city and the urban spaces that are created within it, are investigated. The information gathered is used to create a framework, comprising of a number of matrices, in which one can get a clear understanding of the psychological methods used to deal with the experiences of loneliness and solitude. These psychological matrices are then translated to corresponding architectural methods and concepts which aim to deal with the increasing experiences of loneliness and to achieve the experience of solitude. This framework is then applied to two architectural projects, so as to investigate the specific application of these architectural concepts. These concepts are then discussed in greater detail and in constant relation to the observations carried out in the analysis and the theoretical research. The discussion identifies some of the constituents of the architectural space that hinder or contribute to the experiences of loneliness and solitude: recognising the connections and relationships that are needed to create the desired experiences and atmospheres.
