Issue Date: 2013
Abstract: Purpose: This dissertation sets out to explain the processes of recruitment and selection for accountancy professionals by Maltese recruiting firms. Due to the apparent high demand being experienced in the industry for these individuals and having no previous studies carried out locally on the subject, a need was felt to investigate the current situation in Malta. Design: The research methodology applied takes a qualitative stance. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight major recruiting firms. These interviews provided an understanding of these critical management processes designed to select the right candidates for the right jobs. Findings: As a high demand for accountancy professionals is ever-increasingly present in Malta, firms have employed and divulged greater efforts in recruiting the right personnel. The findings suggest that many firms are currently outsourcing their recruitment and selection efforts to recruiting agencies and firms as they expect a better outcome than could be possibly achieved by means of their own efforts. Furthermore, a distinction among the qualifications sought in these professionals by different employers was discovered. Conclusions: Due to developments in the industry, accounting entities are employing the necessary resources in hiring professionals. Certain improvements in communications between the recruitment firm, the accountancy firm and the candidates being interviewed for employment were suggested. Furthermore, recommendations with respect to the qualifications being currently made available were also put forward. Implications/Value: This dissertation provides a starting point for other researchers to be able to investigate these subject matters further in the local scenario. It directs importance at these processes which are understated by certain entities, and creates value to users of such information and others undertaking similar studies.
