Abstract: This study explores the childhood experiences, reported retrospectively, of 9 adults who grew up with a parent who has a mental health problem. Qualitative data, based on in depth interviews with participants, were analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach The participants' narratives reveal that parental mental illness can have a considerable effect on children during their childhood and adolescent years and it can continue to affect them in their adult life. This research also indicates that children struggle to understand their parent's condition and that they experience feelings of shame. Many of the participants also had to assume a lot of responsibility from a young age. This study also explores the strategies that the participants' employed to cope with their experience and their ability to bounce back from their adversities. Furthermore, it presents the strengths and skills that the participants acquired through their experience. A number of suggestions for the implementation of services for children affected by parental mental illness were put forward by the participants and in light of their experiences and suggestions, recommendations for such services are being made.
