Abstract: The research sets out to investigate if the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is effectively encouraging Gozitan Primary school children to improve their healthy eating habits through the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Furthermore,+ this study will also investigate the chances of helping children maintain healthy diets when they grow up. This campaign is also aiming to reduce the alarmingly high rate of overweight and obesity problems among the Maltese population. Teachers, children and parents or caregivers were the primary source of information, which was then discussed in the light of related literature review. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were utilised to gather the necessary data. Interviews with Primary school teachers, questionnaires with parents, and 'draw and write' technique with children were made use of. Through these tools, the researchers managed to gather different perspectives about the effectiveness of the Scheme. Moreover, this research found out that most teachers believe that the scheme is beneficial to children and is creating the necessary awareness which is an important step in the right direction. Parents and children also favour the scheme but there is plenty of room for improvement and need for deeper education in healthy lifestyle. The research concluded that the scheme should be maintained but should be reinforced with a multi-component campaign to be more effective. This dissertation offers a number of recommendations to make the scheme more influential while reaching and helping children maintain healthy eating habits in the future.
