Abstract: In 1906 Antonio Emannuel Caruana wrote that without a cognition of local history, it was not easy to try to find out the national characteristics of people, and particularly of their language. "The method in which episodes of Maltese history have been recorded", he said "snaps every logical connection of sequences, ands stamps to weak a concept of the moral force that maintains a people firmly on its own ground."
