Abstract: Malta gains respect and recognition through an active Mediterranean foreign policy, which is central to Malta's overall foreign policy framework. An analysis of Malta's Mediterraneanforeign policy has been the focus of my study as I believe it is essential to achieve an in depth understanding of it to truly appreciate the intricacies involved, Malta's foreign policy is at a new stage, following European Union accession in 2004. It thus creates aµeed for examination o(the impact of European Union accession on Malta'sdirection in its foreign policy. The study analysis whether EU membership has influenced Malta's Mediterranean foreign policy; accompanying this, other influential factors are noted providing a clear indication of the determining factors on Malta' Mediterranean foreign policy. The approach adopted has been to first set out a theoretical framework which will allow for analysis in the subsequent chapters. Bilateral relations with immediate neighbors, Italy and Libya are taken as case studies. The study also focuses on multilateral participation at the United Nations and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe to note the different intensities in Malta' s participation in these institutions, and how they impinged on its Mediterranean dimension. The analysis takes a Euro-Mediterranean focus by noting Malta's contribution within the Euto-Mediterranean Partnership and the impact of EU-Malta relations on the Mediterranean dimension of Malta's foreign-policy. The strategic objectives of Malta's foreign policy post-EU membership will be studied to further strengthen conclusions on the determining factors on Malta'sforeign policy. Consideration will be given to both the content and context of Malta's foreign policy making. The study provides the basis for further analysis as Malta continues on its diplomatic role influencing security in the Mediterranean as a European Union member state.
