Abstract: There were various adult education initiatives during the British colonial period in Malta (1800-1964). In this work I seek to provide a historical analysis of the British colonial period with special emphasis on the Language Question and the part played by adult education in furthering the anglicisation process and other British agendae. I then give an outline of several adult education initiatives during the years 1800-1964. I come to the conclusion that Malta lacks a tradition of militant adult education, the exception being Emmanuel Dimech's work. I conclude by providing guidelines for a "History of Adult Education in Malta" and showing how we can apply our knowledge of past initiatives to present-day adult education provisions in Malta. The aim throughout this work is to explore the extent to which adult education has- the potential to 'liberate' or to 'domesticate' as Freire would call it. Historical examples are examined to illustrate this process. An oral history component complements the documents used in this work to ensure that as many voices as possible are included from the discourse forming part of the narrative.
