Abstract: Sixteen years ago, in the Spring of 1989, an exhibition was held at the Cathedral Museum in Mdina. Pharmacists in Art was an exhibition of contemporary paintings, photographs and poems by Pharmacists who had also an interest in Art. Amongst the many exhibits were some manuscripts, from the Archives of the Cathedral Museum, concerning pharmaceutical activities, selected and researched by the renowned Maltese medical historian Dr. Paul Cassar. That venture has inspired this in-depth study of a far wider selection of documents, and an exploration of I 'Arte dello Speziale - the practice of pharmacy - in 17th and 18th century Malta. This has mainly been achieved through an investigation of the spogli documents found at the Archives of the Cathedral Museum. The period studied spanned from 1685 up to 1720, and included the investigation of two hundred and thirty-seven (237) processi di spogli. The spoglio of a Knight of the Order of St. John consisted of all his goods, movable and immovable, together with his debts and credits, which the knight left upon his death. The whole spoglio process involved the settlement of debts, auctioning of his possessions and in general finalising the accounts, for the remaining possessions to be taken over by the Treasury of the Order.
