Abstract: The research question is: "Why did Germany abstain from resolution 1973 and what was the impact of the German foreign policy on the NATO intervention in response to the Libya crisis?" This thesis will focus on the reasons why Germany abstained resolution 1973, the NATO intervention in Libya (March 2011) which was to implement a no-fly zone and support the rebel force. Furthermore the thesis analyses the effects the German abstention had on NATO in terms of being a collective alliance and to act unilaterally.
