Abstract: Relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Malta have been cordial ever since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1965 and the opening of a German embassy in Malta. This dissertation attempts to describe and analyse the cultural relationship that exists between the two countries. In particular, it provides an in-depth study of some aspects that root out from this relationship. Chapter One discusses the educational component, particularly the teaching of the German language in Maltese schools and at the German-Maltese Circle. Due to its importance in tourism and trade, German is being studied by many Maltese of all ages. Unfortunately, interest in the Maltese language from the German side is minimal. Chapter Two emphasizes mutual cooperation in the arts whereby Maltese and German cultural institutions are striving to generate awareness, among their respective patrons, in each other's arts. Furthermore German investment in Malta c.an influence the Maltese to appreciate anything that is German. Chapter Three examines whether German companies are contributing in the propagation of German culture in Malta. This chapter also depicts the impact of tourism in the appreciation of both cultures. It even questions why Germans come to Malta and why Maltese citizens visit Germany. Chapter Four focuses on twinning agreements - an innovative form of cooperation. Two Maltese local councils have made agreements and joined partnerships with German towns. Consequently, this led to several cultural exchanges and personal contacts which continue to prosper to this very day. Finally the conclusion debates whether German cultural relations with Malta are flourishing or diminishing in this day and age. Are they influencing Maltese society? Can we describe them as a success story? Is German culture, after all, leaving its mark?
