Abstract: | Vehicular air pollution has become a major environmental concern across Europe. The number of road vehicles is on the increase and air pollution therefrom is negatively affecting human health. Throughout the past three decades studies have been undertaken to established major sources of air pollution. The European Union (EU) has developed legislation and various regulations to guide its member states. Efforts to control vehicular air pollution are now being implemented across Europe. Despite all this effort, still there is a long way to go especially in some countries like Malta. Malta's attempt to comply with EU emission standards are made by competent authorities working to monitor, regulate and report levels of emissions to the EU. This study aims to better understand Malta's present situation in the context of the EU acquis. It also attempts to prioritise proposed solutions by applying a Multi Criteria Analysis (MCA) on the Malta Air Quality Plan. The identified best options were aimed to mitigate vehicular air pollution in Malta. |
