Abstract: I started this work with four objectives in mind: 1. to identify the causative factors that have brought about the establishment of Government Housing in Malta; 2. to identify the use that both the various administrators and the people have been making of GH; 3. to identify the socio-economic effects that GH has had upon the people; and 4. to identify the physical effects that GH has had upon the landscape. First of all I looked for reasons that have prompted the Governments to participate in the business of constructing, renting and selling residential buildings. Secondly, I looked into the criteria adopted both when providing GH in the various localities in Malta and when allocating such housing. I also analysed evaluations of GH by allottee settlers themselves.
