Abstract: Making regulation work within a business is the main role of the compliance function. Throughout this thesis I have illustrated that this is no mean feat and requires dedication and perseverance from the compliance team. Compliance officers are often a crucial point for the conflict and frustration which regulation can generate within an institution. Therefore, compliance officers must always use their professional judgement to devise ways of achieving the objectives behind the regulations without creating unnecessary restrictions on the business or incurring undue commitment of resources. However, the compliance role is also one of the most fascinating roles to be found in the financial services industry. Unlike most other roles, it requires an extensive and integrated under-funding of an entire organisation and its place in the financial world. Undoubtedly it is a demeaning role but this makes it even more interesting.
