Abstract: So far, limited attention has been given to how children with challenging behaviour experience treatment in the only child psychiatric unit in Malta; the YPU. The aim of this study was to explore how Maltese children admitted in YPU experience the treatment milieu. These findings were triangulated with those of their parents/guardians and of three professionals working in the field. The children's, parents', and professionals' perceptions of the therapeutic value of YPU was elicited. An interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used as a methodology. Semi structured interviews were carried out with four children between eleven and fourteen years who had spent time at YPU. Five parents and three professionals were also interviewed. Despite several discrepancies amongst the views of the different stakeholders, several concerns with regards to the therapeutic value and its impact on the children's lived experience emerged. Possible implications for clinical practice and service provision are discussed.
