Abstract: | The concept of home has been widely researched along the years, however the theoretical understanding of home from. the perspective of elderly people living inside the nursing home still provides space for investigation. With an ever-aging population, nursing home demand is constantly increasing. However, in many cases, these spaces, an amalgamation of the hospital and residential environment, tend to lack the proper sensitivity required by their inhabitants. By looking at the concept of home from. a psychological and architectural context, this research seeks to comprehend the existing link between the residents' notion of home and its relationship to the physical space. The transition from. their personal house into the nursing home is seen as an opportunity that intensifies and clarifies this definition. Therefore, by considering the effects of the transition and identifying the resident's needs, desires and experiences, the following research seeks to analyse the individual characteristics of the person's definition of home and the way it was redefined through the new living conditions. |
