Abstract: Studies abroad have frequently shown that linseed oil applications on porous building stone are not beneficial. To date, limited research in this field has been carried out locally. The author of this study had already presented an undergraduate dissertation in 2006 with the title 'Studies of the use of linseed oil on building materials with particular reference to Globigerina Limestone. This study provided initial information on the widespread use of this water repellent in the Maltese Islands. Following this work, the need was felt for scientific research to analyse the effect continued linseed oil applications were having on the local Globigerina Limestone. The current dissertation focuses on the effects, especially as regards liquid and water vapour movement, linseed oil applications have, once applied to this very porous limestone, and also what happens after ageing. Testing carried out included: visual observations, ink penetration test, contact angle, water vapour movement, water movement by capillary, total porosity, salt tests and viewing of treated and untreated samples by Scanning Electron Microscopy.
