Abstract: Following the First and Second World wars, six of the affected European nations would set up several intergovernmental organisations in order to preserve a peaceful unity. The creation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) in 1951 and the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1958 sought to strengthen the economic ties between these nations as well as avoiding future conflicts. Since then, one of the Union's major policies has been to expand its geopolitical and economic territory, thus allowing the entity to gradually grow in size in the decades to come. As a result, the 27 member European Union (EU) that it has become today is soon to consist of 28 members whilst several other countries, including Turkey, are waiting in line for accession.
