Abstract: | This dissertation presents findings of a study on awareness and participation of Maltese youth aged between 18 and 30 years in the concrete action of the European Union's (EU's) youth policy framework, namely, the Youth in Action (YiA) Programme. The study aims to explore factors that encourage or hinder participation in the Programme by means of a mixed methodology research strategy that includes an online questionnaire, interviews and focus groups. Statistical and thematic analyses reveal that many young people are unassociated (do not belong to any non-governmental organisation (NGO) or association). Due to this, it is quite a challenge to cater for them and especially to motivate them to participate and take up opportunities which they are provided with. Thus, social capital is identified as a significant variable. Participation in the Programme is low, as well as awareness, and factors that hinder this participation include ineffective communication of information which is related to lack of awareness, young people's passivity to their surroundings, school priorities, their perspectives on educational mobility and voluntary work as unnecessary, among others. Hence, recommendations include encouragement of young people to affiliate themselves with organisations, more recognition of non-formal education in our society, and providing better information for young people through the proper channels. Furthermore, the application form should be provided in the Maltese language for more inclusion. |
