dc.description.abstract | The use of morphological features to identify olive varieties has long been established. Major olive-producing countries such as Italy and Spain have compiled databases of morphological characteristics pertaining to different olive varieties and most have proceeded to cataloguing a list of all the varieties present in their country. In the Maltese Islands no such catalogue exists. In addition to this, apart from those mentioned by Borg (1922), information pertaining to the morphological features of indigenous Maltese varieties is lacking. The purpose of this study was to construct an identification key for olive varieties based solely on morphological features collected from existing databases, using the key to identify olive varieties present in the field and hence determining which olive varieties are present in the Maltese Islands. A multi-access identification key was constructed and implemented using Lucid v3.3. Validation of the key against 15 olive varieties of known identity yielded a 100% effective result, while when used in the field its effectiveness ranged between 99.7% and 100%. A total of 25 sites (14 in Gozo and 11 in Malta) were sampled. Use of the key in the field yielded a total of 52 different varieties originating from 9 different territories. The most abundant variety in the Island of Gozo and the two Islands combined was the French variety Lucques, while the most abundant in the island of Malta was the Greek variety Mavrelia (CHA000043). | en_GB |
