Abstract: The deeper offshore waters around the Maltese Islands are some of the least studied in Europe resulting in a lack of knowledge on the deep-sea (circalittoral and bathyal) biocoenoses within the Malta 25-Nautical Mile Fisheries Management Zone (FMZ). The present study was carried out to identify and characterise offshore benthic assemblages found in the upper circalittoral and bathyal zones within the Malta FMZ and the surrounding waters, and is based on by-catch samples collected during the Mediterranean International Trawl Surveys (MED ITS). A total of 103 samples collected during the summers of 2009, 2010 and 2011 were analysed. Data on sediment samples collected by grab (by fisheries personnel) from a number of these stations were also incorporated within the study.
