Abstract: Due to their particular characteristics, many molluscan species, such as Mytilus galloprovincalis, and Patella rustica are used for biological monitoring of coastal and marine waters. The absence of both these species from the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett harbour areas led to a preliminary study in 2001 on the potential use of the polyplacophoran Lepidochitona corrugata as a bioindicator of heavy metal pollution. The aim of the present study is to further explore this possibility and to provide concrete answers to key questions on the suitability of this species.
