Abstract: Perception is a crucial consideration in the design and functionality of posters. This study aims to identify a factor, or factors, which dictate perception of visuals (including text), in particular those in posters. Using focus groups to identify issues within this area, and departing from a linguistic approach proceeding through the various communication theories discussing perception, with particular reference to semiological theories, the research identifies culture, including experience and upbringing, as the main element involved in such perception.
