Abstract: This dissertation begins with a summary of the development of the concepts of the modem movement in Europe and the United States, focusing on the period from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1960s. The scope of the dissertation is tracing these concepts of modem architecture in different building typologies and analyzing the manifestations on the local scene and how the use of new materials and building techniques been interpreted in the local environment and culture. Further, the dissertation will focus on particular examples from local modernism trying to analyze how they developed from global movements and the relationship between the movement and local technology and society. Finally, this dissertation will discuss the reasons behind the failure of the full implementation of the modern movement.
