dc.description.abstract | This work introduces biodiversity in chapter 1, be defining what it is, outlining its economic value and why it should be taken in consideration in national accounts. Its recreational value, the ecological importance of biodiversity, the intrinsic and aesthetic aspects of biodiversity conservation are then outlined, emphasising sustainable use but taking into account the precautionary principle. Chapter 2 deals with the problems facing the conservation of biodiversity in the Maltese Islands: habitat loss through population growth, the level of local education, culture and mentality, and the effects and impacts of imports and exports. Chapter 3 discusses the strategies for the management of biodiversity. Present and other additional needed policies are discussed. The contribution of formal and non-formal education and the control of introductions and reintroduction of species, as backed by international treaties are also discussed. Ways of managing biodiversity through protected areas and the criteria for declaring various types according to internationally accepted standards are also treated, as are measures for conserving biodiversity through ex-situ conservation, ecotourism and the input of non-governmental organisations. The various international treaties that deal with the management of biodiversity and the position of Malta in relation to these are discussed in chapter 4. | en_GB |
