Abstract: The primary aim of this dissertation study is to look at the developments in the field of loadbearing wall structures in the past thirty years. This study is mainly based on British research and Codes of Practice but reference is made to research done in other countries such as Switzerland and the United States. It is hoped that, by examining the progress done in these countries, some new light can be cast on our age old system of construction - namely loadbearing masonry. To facilitate the envisaged transition from the Imperial to the Metric system of units, both systems are used as far as possible in the text. To avoid any difficulties, calculations are worked out in Imperial units.
