Abstract: Be it a road, an airfield or a shipping terminal, the importance of a suitable pavement can never be over emphasised. Transportation networks are the essential links for remote and peripheral areas to major market areas. A road network allows communities to participate in the prosperity that greater trade can bring. The pressure on the available resources is nevertheless immense in the face of rising traffic, thus road engineers need to get the most from the least expenditure. Road design is an emerging field of study in Malta, which warrants due consideration and skill. This important aspect in the development of roads must, by necessity, be accompanied with the related research work, which should be suited to meet the particular needs of the country. Research has shown that better compaction of asphalt mixtures would markedly improve the structural performance of pavements. Full benefit from the use of bituminous materials in road construction and maintenance depends on achieving a satisfactory degree of compaction. Good compaction increases the stiffness and strength of the material, the resistance to deformation, and the durability of the mixture. The relationship between compaction and the latter properties is an important indicator in controlling road performance. The idea of this study is to contribute in its own small, humble way to this continuous research process. The results shall show that there is a potential to promote further detailed studies.
