Abstract: With the advent of concrete planks and the requirement of larger and higher buildings, higher masonry walls have started to be subjected to higher loads that are not infact purely axial. As a result, the following questions arose: has the risk for inherent eccentricities increased to proportions that might be considered dangerous?; axially loaded walls must usually be designed to resist out-of-plane bending or not? These inherent questions and many other more, have provided the need to analyze this phenomenon in detail in order to provide standards for Maltese masonry practice. This project was undertaken to expand the knowledge of the -behaviour of local unreinforced limestone masonry, which is the principal mode of building used in Malta, under an eccentric combination of loading. The programme of work started approximately five years ago when a testing frame was built to enable 230 x 200 x 526mm stone couplets to be tested under vertical and eccentric combinations of loading. Recently, the programme has proceeded to tests to assess the influence of eccentricity of the applied load, the influence of the mortar type to the relative moment capacity of the overall section, and the amount of rotation as related to the amount of stress imposed on the test stone unit
