Abstract: One of the subjects studied in Urban Planning is Urban Geography. This subject deals mainly with the patterns of Urban areas. For this reason it concerns the city. The city is an international phenomenon. It is very complex and is composed of many forces acting simultaneously. One of these is the commercial force. This force operates mainly in the Central Business District (CBD). This area is present in all cities. Due to its function and usual location, the CBD can be described as the most important area of the city. Little work, if any, has been carried out in Malta regarding this aspect. Hence, the beginning has to be realized. The first choice is Valletta. This is the capital city of Malta. It is without doubt, the most important city and part of our national heritage. to be examined in depth. It has The primary aim of this work is to increase the awareness and need for such studies. These should not concern only the CBD but also all the other factors composing the city of Valletta. Furthermore, such studies should not concern only Valletta but should go one step further so as to include the relationships between our major areas. At the outset it is necessary to understand the field of study. For this reason, one of the aims is to study any theories related to the city. In this way, the reader will start to understand more what constitutes the city and what are its theoretical patterns. Most of these theories have surely been realized after empirical tests were carried out.
