A proposal for a quality classification system for local hollow concrete blockwork

Abstract

The use of hollow concrete blockwork was introduced in the late fifties / early sixties in the local construction industry. Recently the use of hollow concrete blocks is increasing and it is being more widely used. Some of its uses have replaced elements previously constructed with reinforced concrete within certain limits. Hollow concrete blocks are being used both structurally and also as a non-load bearing. In Malta its use is becoming even more extensive since it is being used for the construction of walls, reservoirs, etc...
