Abstract: The importance of Malta from a military point of view throughout the last four hundred and fifty years, has left a deep imprint on the Island from various aspects. Visually, there can be no question as to the original purpose of the massive system of fortifications that guard the Grand Harbour Area from land and sea. Not so obvious, perhaps, but not so obscure either, are a different set of landmarks which are also of a military nature. These are the fortifications of later eras: the low-profile Victorian forts, the WW2 gun batteries and pill boxes and other military works erected between the 1860's and the 1940's. Although far from being as massive or awesome as their predecessors, they too form part of an extensive system of military facilities which were built and improved upon throughout different periods to meet the specific needs of the time. Further observation reveal another set of landmarks which are traditionally related to the presence of a military power. These are the quarters, barracks, parade grounds, nissen huts, rifle ranges and a myriad of other facilities needed to administer, train and house the various personnel involved.
