Abstract: Built in 1566 by the Sovereign Military Order of St John of Jerusalem, Valletta always offered its visitors an experience of extremities. While the architecture of the auberges, palaces and churches is recognized and appreciated by many, the urban fabric of the lower lying areas was and is still less known to outsiders. The daily activities that took place in the humble quarter of the Manderaggio, now lie buried beneath the present blocks of flats and Piazza Mattia Preti. The rich history of this area, dating back to the building of the Citta` Nuova can nowadays be traced either through photographic documentation, through recounts by the elderly, or through glimpses of the remains which can be viewed from overlying property. Perceptions thus allow individuals to make judgement and form an impression of the place and its inhabitants. The study seeks to analyse such perceptions as well as the concerns of the inhabitants, with the objective of the study being the empowerment of the residents in urban design proposals. The essay discusses the injection of innovative activities into the Manderaggio area so as to render it an attraction rather than a bypassing route from Marsamuscetto up to Valletta. Potential uses are debated from an urban, architectural, historical and social perspective. The rehabilitation proposal will undoubtedly rekindle memories for many inhabitants who recall the Manderaggio in its heyday while addressing current needs and issues. Given the strategic location close to the port, the Manderaggio will bear strongly on the city's future as a whole.
