Analysis of concrete within the tidal/splash zone of marine concrete structures

Abstract

The objective of this dissertation is to carry out a comparative study of the concrete within different parts of the same structure, comparing parts within the tidal/splash zone and others at a different part of the same structure, where it is believed that the same mix was poured. Samples shall be obtained by coring into the structure. At this point a relative analysis of the particular structure would be performed in a visual, durability, strength and chemical sense. A correlation between concrete within the tidal/splash zone and in a less corrosive region would be established. The localities to be investigated were shortlisted to three. The criteria for their selection is basically their method of construction, a balance between different years of construction and also the selection of a locations within the Grand Harbour region, in the Northern Part of the Island and within part in the Marsaxlokk Basin.
