Abstract: Architecture creates spaces that are used and enjoyed by the general public. From a conservation point of view, the open spaces hence must be preserved in the same way as the historic buildings, as the spaces are created by the architectural fabric and hence are an integral part of the historical fabric. The aim of this dissertation is to preserve these open spaces and give them back to society. 'Spaces' are transformed into 'places' by giving them meaning, to provide a 'Living Heritage'. The study also includes proposals of a possible solution to improve the use of the existing open spaces by making the history felt, interpreted and participatory in the design.
