Abstract: When attempting to determine the completion date for any job, whether it is the building of a bridge, laying of pipeline or any other task in hand, it is necessary to schedule all the activities that make up the task, that is to say, a plan must be prepared. The need for planning and scheduling has always been present, but the complexity and competitiveness of modern projects now require that this need should be met than just recognized. Planning is the process of choosing the one method and order of work to be adopted for a project from all the possible ways and sequences in which it could be done. A plan should be explicit and in terms which are easy to and communicate through. It must be sufficiently flexible to be changed when necessary and above all, capable of being fulfilled. There are very good reasons for planning and controlling any project. The larger and the more complex a project is, the more acute the need for planning becomes. A project becomes complex since there are numerous activities and the completion of one activity will often influence and determine the initiation and completion of other activities. Many people will be engaged on different tasks at various times, each task being dependent on another to a greater or lesser extent and all tasks demanding that one should not delay any other.
