Abstract: The number of older persons in developing and developed countries is large and increasing rapidly. The estimated worldwide figure of 489 million in 1990 will go up to around 1.22 billion by the year 2025, 70% of these in developing countries. This growth is the result of extremely large birth cohorts in developing countries, experienced in the post World War 2 era, and advancements in medicine and technology which have lengthened the human being's average age (Appendix B ). Comparative information is not available for Malta.
