Abstract: The important role of a small business in an economy suggests that an understanding of why firms fail (and others are successful) is crucial to maintain stability in a modem economy. There is a growing interest, worldwide and on a national level, in identifying factors associated with the conduct and performance of small firms. An understanding of such factors would enable public policy makers and small business advisors to assess the small business sector better. As Cochran states, ''Like the weather, small business failure is the subject of much discussion . . . But unlike the weather . . . there is a dearth of timely, reliable, and relevant information on small business failures ... " Businesses in general are facing different challenges in order to survive. One of the challenges is globalisation, where, on one hand, it is helping businesses to open up to new economies and, on the other, facing firms to increasing levels of competition. Consumers are nowadays more knowledgeable about what a market can offer to them and how it is offered them. They are free to change from one supplier to another. In the midst of such a race, losers are expected. Businesses can lose market share, consumers, money and profits. When losses materialise, someone has to pay the consequences. One can state that the owners of the businesses are the ones who will eventually pay and consumers gain. However, when a business fails, real economic losses are imposed on the economy and therefore, it is good public policy for the authorities concerned to intervene in order to prevent or minimize as much as possible such business losses.
