A comparative study of the stock control systems installed within 5-star Maltese hotels

Abstract

An organization's stock can appear as a mixed blessing, since it counts as an asset on the balance sheet, but it also ties up money that might serve for other purposes and requires additional expense for its protection. Those companies or hotels which manage to control their stocks at a minimum without affecting the operations of the company would surely be in a better position when compared to other similar organizations. The objective of this dissertation is to identify the differences in the stock control systems of Maltese 5-star hotels, thus comparing these different systems found and evaluating any advantages or disadvantages which may be attributable to such systems. Research was conducted through a number of interviews carried out in local 5- star hotels. Out of the 6 hotels contacted, the researcher managed carry out 4 interviews, yielding a response of 67%. From the study made it may be concluded that the majority of local 5-star hotels operate more or less the same type of stock control system. There are differences from one system to another but the main aspects of stock control are nearly the same. The study also reveals that all local 5-star hotels are knowledgeable of the importance of having a good stock control system in place and that efficient management of stock can result in better profits.
