Abstract: The scope of this dissertation was to study the behaviour of piles when constructed in a row to support and resist the effects of lateral loadings caused by the excavation and building below levels of adjacent structures. The various types of piles, methods, and equipment currently in use in local construction are discussed through reference to case histories. Different methods and theories thus far adopted in estimating the lateral response of both, single and group piles are studied and compared. For the purpose of this dissertation, blue clay was the chosen soil medium. The tests were conducted on a purposely built model that seeks to simulate the natural environment and conditions existing where piles are used in construction projects. The design and construction of the test model are explained in great detail as are the instruments used. A step-by-step account of the procedure used is also provided. The analysis of the data acquired is explained, discussed and illustrated by means of numerous tables and graphs. As a conclusion, it was found that the greater the depth of embedment, the greater is the lateral load required for the piles to yield, and that the most efficient pile spacing between the piles is deemed to be that of four times the diameter of the pile. The tests being a first of their kind undertaken locally, recommendations are made for further studies on the given subject.
