Abstract: In this dissertation a qualitative approach was used to study female bus drivers. The rationale behind this dissertation is to identify the difficulties women encounter at their workplace because of their gender. The study analyses the problems women have to face in atypical occupations and how they adapt to these challenges. The research took into consideration familial responsibilities as they co-exist with work responsibilities. Data was collected using both participant observation sessions and qualitative interviews. The researcher conducted thirteen participant observation sessions and eight qualitative interviews with female drivers, who were recruited through snowball sampling. On the whole, the researcher found that as soon as the female drivers entered the field, they altered certain characteristics both physical and emotional. In addition, the majority of female bus drivers did not have any caring duties. Also, it was found that, women entered this male-dominated sector, in the bus driver occupation only as the company urgently required employees. Other occupations within this sector including mechanics, engineers and inspectors are still male-dominated.
