An analysis of local basketball finances following the impact of the 15th September 2003 storm

Abstract

The heavy storm which hit Malta on 15th September 2003 had severe implications on the local basketball since the basketball pavilion at Ta' Qali. As a result, the parquet was ruined and basketball games could not be played on it. However, the MBA decided not to cancel the basketball season. Such decision forced the MBA to rent out other pavilions which subsequently involved further costs. The study determines the total cost of the storm with regard to local basketball and how such cost was divided among the MBA, Kunsill Malta ghall-Isport and the Maltese Government. The scope of this study is to propose new activities to the MBA in order to improve the present financial position. This required an interview with the general secretary of the MBA and quotations to be obtained from several companies to estimate the cost of the new equipment required for the proposed activities. The study also required 275 questionnaires to be distributed among basketball players and supporters, university students and the general public to determine whether there is demand for the new activities and to estimate the revenue which would be obtained from such activities. The dissertation is concluded by presenting recommendations to the MBA emerging from the questionnaires and from the study including the recommendation to start insuring the basketball pavilion against extraordinary events such as flooding.
