Abstract: This dissertation explored the possibility through which the aesthetic quality of the streetscapes of Malta could be enhanced by broadening the palette of façade cladding materials. The literature review consisted of a survey of the various materials available in the product-markets, with a focus on the aesthetic aspects. These were grouped into seven broad categories namely: Natural Stone, Brickworks & Ceramics, Concrete & Cement, Metals, Glass, Plastics and Timber. Each material was presented by means of a description and discussion of the cladding products deriving from the base material, their specific aesthetic characteristics and selected sites in which they have been successfully utilised. Primary knowledge was gathered through the established architectural literature, whilst information regarding the more innovative cladding products was gathered through product literature from an array of renowned manufacturers. The aesthetic effect created by the use of innovative façade cladding materials within the architectural context was then explored through a set of empirical observational case studies of contemporary projects in Malta. The main research tool consisted of a purposely designed thematic observational sheet addressing the choice of façade cladding material, its creative use and its impact on the existing streetscape. In order to assess practice in Malta with respect to international practice, a similar series of onsite studies were carried out on contemporary projects in . the UK, and a comparative analysis carried out. A photoshop-based imaginative exercise was then carried out to demonstrate the hypothesis that alternative façade cladding materials applied to architecture within the typical Maltese streetscape would provide a major enhancement of the visual quality of the urban experience. This exercise focused on residential streetscapes. On the basis of this dissertation it is recommended that, in view of the impact that the aesthetic quality of the urban environment has upon the Maltese population and the visiting tourist, designers should promote and employ the increased use of diverse materials in their facades. This would lead to a more visually stimulating Maltese streetscape.
