Deviant role models : the experiences of teachers with tattoos

Abstract

This study will take a look at the phenomenon of being a University of Malta student taking a B.Ed course, with tattoos, and perspectives regarding the subject matter. The research question is aimed at investigating several areas of this topic and the different contexts in which it might be viewed. The importance of the question lies in providing a multitude of scenarios of both the art of tattooing and the personal experience of it and opinions regards it. The methodology adopted was IPA, through an individual interview with each of the five participants. The results show how the participants feel restricted from getting certain tattoos done and from having a particular desired image by their future teaching workplace, while at the same time agreeing it should be as such due to societal expectations and professionalism. They feel the need of a change of local mentality as regards this practice and more acceptance from society in general, cutting off stereotypes on the basis of looks. There was also an emphasis upon the influence from their loved ones determining their considerations about getting tattoos done. The discussion brings to light the emotional significance and meaning behind getting a tattoo done and the point to which a person is ready to reveal it to others both due to personal issues as well as tolerance, and having the courage to cross social norm barriers, despite what others think of them. Having something which others, such as colleagues and strangers might not know about gave a feeling of intimacy, mystery and empowering ownership as well as disclosure, distance, lack of personality and trust in others at the same time by hiding. The use of this study is to connect and compare two different social dimensions which might not be related or expected, investigating how people manage to tackle two different lifestyles. It is interesting to see how an academic, role-model environment intertwines with one's choice to deviate from the norms of society through getting a tattoo. This study also looks at the modernization of tattooing and its spreading across all social classes.
