Abstract: The purpose of this study is to throw some light on the share of wages in the Maltese National Income, and on the pattern of wage differentials. The study also contains a brief discussion on theoretical issues connected with wages. These are presented in chapters I and II. In Malta there were 107814 persons employed in 1975. Of these, about 24 per cent were employed in the manufacturing industry and about 31 per cent in public administration, public enterprises and parastatal enterprises. The other important sectors which provided employment were retail and wholesale trade (about 11 per cent) and private services (about 12 per cent). In attempting to analyse the share of wages we have considered the economy as a whole and particular sectors individually. The results are presented and discussed in chapter III. Chapter IV contains an analysis of wage differentials in the manufacturing industry which provides a considerable amount of employment and income in Malta.
