Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out what prevents some students from leaving their eleven years of compulsory education with the necessary qualifications needed for higher education or employability. This study tries to find out why some students fail. In the literature review, a number of studies were focused upon. The barriers were listed under two categories: those internal to school and those factors external to school, namely the family. This was followed by a survey conducted among 77 adult learners and an interview with two teachers teaching at this level. The ages of the respondents ranged from 16 till the age of 30. The participants were attending evening classes at M'Regina, Blata l-Bajda and the Lifelong Centre at the Junior College premises. The research was carried out using a questionnaire. From the research it was clear that factors within the school play a major role when compared to the family regarding the students' educational achievement.
