Abstract: Having attended a lecture at the Shakespeare's Globe in London last summer on 'The Tempest on Film', I realised that the subject had potential for a thesis. I have always loved both film and literature, co by combining the two I was able to write about my favourite subjects. The Tempest is Shakespeare's most spectacular play and has always presented a daunting task to any director, whether on stage or film. I was intrigued by the notion that certain films could have a title other than The Tempest, have seemingly no connection with the play, and yet still be considered as an adaptation or 'offshoot' of The Tempest. The three films I shall be discussing are Forbidden Planet, a 1950s science fiction take on The Tempest, Yellow Sky, a western that is loosely based on The Tempest, and Age of Consent, a film not directly based on The Tempest but which draws a number of elements from the play. Since my interest was in offshoots, I did not include certain famous adaptations of The Tempest such as Jarman's The Tempest or Greenaway's Prospero 's Books.
