Abstract: Rev. Thaddeus O’Malley (1796–1877), the renowned cleric known as the ‘Father of Irish Federalism’, was rector of the University of Malta between 1841 and 1842. During his tenure, he devised a rudimentary linguistic project with the intention of ‘improving the Maltese Dialect’. He intended to carry into effect a plan for the introduction in primary schools of a more purely Arabic form of the local tongue. With the help of still unknown informants, he also formulated a new alphabet for the Maltese language.
