Overview: Volcanoes are cracks of the Earth's crust through which the magma, as an incandescent mixture of liquid, gas and crystals, reaches the surface. Depending on the nature and the state of magma, two main volcanic types are distinguished, the effusive and the explosive ones, and many intermediate behaviours can occur, in function of the geological nature of the soil (INGV- OV). A volcano is defined as effusive if the magma is emitted in the form of a lava flow characterized by gas bubbles dispersed in a continuous liquid: the Etna volcano in Sicily (Italy), for example, belongs to this category.en_GB
