Sustainable alternative tourism in the Maltese islands : focusing on active voluntourism

Abstract

This study explores the importance of sustainable alternative tourism in the Maltese Islands specifically Active Voluntourism. This term was created for the purposes of defining the events that local organizations prepare which involve the volunteering aspect. Moreover, the points examined in this paper revolve around the concept of a relatively new series on the Travel Channel called 'The Ethical Hedonist'. With the aid of informal semi-structured interviews/discussions and participant observation, this research delves into perspectives which local organizations express on the current state of tourism in Malta. The main purpose of this paper is to enhance the awareness of sustainable alternative tourism and counteracting the negative impacts of mass tourism on small island destinations such as Malta. Additionally it aims to show how Active Voluntourism can become a part of this. This research shows that mass tourism and its negative effects are taking its toll on the natural environment. Sustainable alternative tourism through these events and volunteers can counteract these issues. Results also demonstrate organizations' distinct perspectives on the industry today; strongly suggesting sustainable alternative tourism as the solution. Additionally, promotion is an element which proved worthwhile, among enhancing educational awareness. Likewise, Active Voluntourism proved to be a positive term with which respondents can link their events to. Lastly, the Maltese Islands are seen as having great potential for sustainable alternative tourism, given its small size and natural environment.
