Abstract: The study examines the factors that contribute to infidelity in committed relationships. The review of the literature presents the most prominent theoretical perspectives and understandings of who engages in infidelity, why and gender difference in doing so. Using semi-structured interviews, the work obtains narrative data from two family therapists and two psychotherapists. The qualitative analysis reveals six main themes through which factors contribute towards the occurrence of infidelity. It also examines the different motivations for engaging in infidelity across gender. The findings show that factors leading to infidelity are various, which include relationship dissatisfaction, communications problems, unmet sexual and emotional needs, and opportunities amongst others. The results also highlight differences in 'meaning' of and motivations for committing infidelity and engaging in affairs across genders. Implications of such findings and future considerations are discussed.
